Impromptu Café is an award-winning full-service restaurant offering a wide variety of made-to-order selections in a casual atmosphere. Located on the third floor of the Kansas Union, Impromptu is the ideal spot on campus for a relaxing lunch with friends in the main dining room, or to host your group meeting or retreat in our private dining room. Pressed for time? No problem−just call us at 864-8001 for quick, convenient carry-out. Join us from 11am to 2pm Monday through Friday when classes are in session.   Hours of Operation

Great Menu, Great Prices

Impromptu features Executive Chef Janna Traver´s eclectic mix of tried-and-true menu favorites coupled with innovative seasonal offerings. Be sure to check out the chalkboard for our daily specials, including freshly-baked Quiche of the Day and made-from-scratch soups. Share some Chipotle Chicken Dip with made-to-order tortilla chips, or our Chef´s recipe Hummus - we start with organic garbanzo beans! Treat yourself to our famously addictive Top Shelf Grilled Cheese sandwich or Seared Salmon Entreè, or try one of our crisp and cool appetizer or entreè salads. Indulge your sweet tooth with our house-made Vanilla Bean Flan, Chocolate Mousse, or special dessert while you linger over a cup of Pulse blend (Fair Trade Certified!) coffee. Supporting Local Farmers

Impromptu is committed to supporting local farmers as part of the overall Dining Services sustainability initiative. Our house-made Watermelon Lemonade starts with fresh watermelon from Britt´s Farm. Some recent locally-grown offerings have included: G&J Farms Tomato Bisque, Grilled Pendleton´s Asparagus Sandwich with Landeria Farms Goat Cheese, and hormone-free, grass-fed Bison Sliders from Lone Star Lake Bison Ranch, just to name a few. Fresh herbs and produce from Chef Janna´s Union rooftop garden inspire our daily specials during the growing season. Even the flowers on your table are local!

Private Room Available

Departmental Billing Available

Impromptu offers direct billing to KU departments. This service allows you to entertain colleagues, visitors, and prospective candidates without the hassle of carrying cash. If your department would like to utilize this service, please fill out this form and remit to Kim Nixon at kimnixon@ku.edu.
