Student Veteran’s Lounge

Student veterans now have a place to call their own on the University of Kansas campus, thanks to the support of the KU Memorial Unions and local businesses.

The Student Veterans Lounge, on the upper level of Burge Union, opened on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2009, with a ceremony and reception. It is located in the Burge Union in Room 306.

The 300-square-foot room formerly housed KU’s Trademark and Licensing Office. It now features a table and chairs, a sofa, three computer work stations, a bookshelf and a television-DVD unit.

The KU Memorial Unions provided $8,000 for the work stations and refurbished space. J&J Carpets of Lawrence discounted the cost of new carpeting, and Scott Rice Office Works discounted the cost of three task chairs. The total cost of the makeover was $9,200.

“With the new educational benefits provided by the Post-9/11 GI Bill, we expect to see more and more veterans attending KU,” said Betty Childers, adviser to the student group and certifying official in the Office of Veterans Services. “The lounge gives those students a place to drop in, connect with other veterans and hold meetings.” The lounge will be open during the Burge Union’s regular operating hours.
