University of Kansas Memorial Corporation celebrates 100 anniversary

Over 100 years, ago on May 10, 1921, a group met for the first time on The University of Kansas campus to discuss the construction of what would ultimately become a student union -- the home to a number of student groups, Student Senate chambers, and ultimately a "home away from home" for all Jayhawks. This group established the Memorial Corporation, established as a result of the "Million Dollar Drive", an initiative to raise funds for three World War I memorials on campus.

Memorial Corporation. The week of May 3, the Kansas Union at the University of Kansas will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its corporation. celebrating with events from May 3-May 7. - at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 19, with a rededication ceremony at the front entrance on Jayhawk Boulevard.

The Kansas Union was built as a memorial to the 130 KU alumni and students who died in World War I. A roll of honor and other artifacts were sealed in a copper box and placed behind the 1925 cornerstone of the building on April 19, 1926. The Kansas Union was dedicated by then-Chancellor Ernest H. Lindley following a parade down Jayhawk Boulevard. The building has endured many changes, including several renovations and additions, and a fire in 1970.
